Despite a clear downward trend in the numbers of pedestrians and cyclists killed in Germany and Europe, the study indicates that there is still an urgent need for action on many points. According to experts, the greatest potential for optimisation lies in the better recognition of vulnerable road users, a higher rate of helmet use, more modern lighting systems in cars, the development of infrastructure and more considerate behaviour. Following the publication of reports on passenger cars (2008), heavy goods vehicles (2009) and motorcycles (2010), the new road safety report is once again intended to stimulate discussion among politicians, traffic and transport experts, manufacturers and scientific institutions and associations and to give advice to pedestrians, cyclists and all other road users to enable them, through their behaviour, greater risk awareness and compliance with safety standards, to further reduce the number of injuries and deaths on our roads.
Striving towards an enhanced safety optimisation for road users
5 May 2011 was the date of the Parliamentary Evening for the Security Report 2011 – Pedestrians and Bicycle riders – a conference held in Brussels by Clemens Klinke, member of the DEKRA board and president of the executive branch DEKRA Automobil GmbH.
Discussed at this summit were the statistics of deaths and the safety measures to be taken by both non-vehicle and vehicle road users. Reports and studies have shown that deaths of non-vehicle road users in the German city Saarland amount to 1/4th of road casualties. Although there has been a decline in road deaths of pedestrians and bicycle riders, there is an increasing demand for safety optimisation. Most vulnerable are children under 15 years of age and seniors above 65 years.
